Blazing sky Petri Ala-Maunus and Mauno Markkula

Two painters from different eras, Petri Ala-Maunus (b. 1970) and Mauno Markkula (1905–1959), meet in the realm of landscape. They are separated by half a century, yet united by a longing for something greater than reality – a landscapethat depicts not a place, but a state of mind. In Blazing Sky, the publication accompanying the exhibition of the same name, 
Hilja Roivainen, PhD, examines the artists’ work through themes including imagination, utopia, apocalypse, and colour. HAM curators Kati Kivinen and Aki Pohjankyrö engage in conversation with artist Petri Ala-Maunus about the creation of landscapes, self-portraits, black metal, and MaunoMarkkula. PhD Christina Bäcksbacka sheds light on her family’s relationship with Markkula and his work.
