Tove Jansson’s Before the Masquerade (1943) is a colourful, decorative piece created amid the surrounds of wartime Helsinki. During the 1940s, Jansson painted floral arrangements, portraits, interior scenes and fantasy landscapes, with the fairytale worlds offering the artist an escape from the greyness of war. Before the Masquerade was featured in Jansson’s first solo exhibition at Bäcksbacka’s Art Gallery in 1943. Nowadays, the piece forms part of HAM Helsinki Art Museum’s Leonard and Katarina Bäcksbacka Collection.
