SURVIVAL GUIDE for A POST-APOCALYPTIC CHILD

30,00

"I have made the Survival guide for the end of the world child work for all of us who live in this moment and time, in the midst of huge social, climatic or personal changes. The idea behind my work is that some chain of events affecting life on Earth is already underway. Something political, social or environmental is irreversibly in the middle of a big change. What should we remember, learn and pass on from this time? How can we dream up new ways of living?"

– Nastja Säde Rönkkö

The videos of the installation that fills HAM's large arched hall are stories of loss, longing and the last moments of society as we know it. At the same time, they look at coping on an individual level, how to cope with big personal turning points and the difficult emotional states they cause. The artist gives practical guidance on which plants to eat when lost in the forest and at the same time creates imaginary future worlds about moving to another planet. The themes of the whole can be enlivened by reflecting them on one's own emotional states or, more broadly, on the global crises at hand.

The piece was originally produced by the Lönnström Art Museum as part of the Lönnström project series in the fall of 2022. The renewed ensemble that can be seen now has been curated by HAM curator Satu Metsola and exhibition manager Kati Kivinen. At HAM, the whole is completed by a new series of sculptures, paintings and a soundscape designed by Timo Kaukolampi. In connection with the exhibition, the English-language book Survival Guide for a Post-Apocalyptic Child will be published in cooperation with the artist and the Lönnström Art Museum.
